NBC News Investigates Dental Insurance

Image result for images dental tourism

Is dental insurance worth the cost?

You need medical insurance, if only to protect against the cost of an accident or illness so expensive that you could be ruined financially. But do you really need dental insurance?
It’s an interesting question, because you can avoid the most likely causes and expenses of dental problems, decay and gum disease, by brushing and flossing your teeth diligently. But some teeth are more prone to problems, and when they have a problem, the costs can mount quickly.

FIXING BROKEN AND CHIPPED TEETH - Remedies from crowns and veneers

How To Fix Your Broken Smile
By the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association

Does your smile look like you've been chewing on rocks?
Are your teeth chipped, cracked or broken - some with painful jagged edges?  Do you self-consciously cover your mouth when you speak or are afraid to smile in public or for photos?

Here's some temporary and permanent remedies to fix your smile including dental pain relievers dental  crowns, veneers.

A broken piece of tooth or jagged edge inside the mouth can cause infection, injury and be a constant source irritation to the tongue. If visible when you open your mouth or smile your self-esteem can be adversely affected.

Almost as badly as if you had missing teeth!

Photo: Justin Bieber without teeth. Cosmetic dentistry candidate? Nope - he needs implants or dentures.

The following immediate remedies can be taken prior to seeing a dentist:
  • For pain take Advil, Tylenol, Dolac and if you have an infection - Ampicillin the penicillin based anti-biotic.
  • In many countries like Mexico you can buy it without a prescription or go to a generic pharmacy like Dr. Simi’s in Mexico where clinics are staffed with an in-house doctors who will consult and prescribe meds for $3-$5.
  • A salt water or borax and water rinse can help. Use mouthwashes like Oral B Black and Original Listerine to alleviate pain, minor infection and abscesses.
  • Sterilize a nail file or other small tool file and file the jagged edges down.

Ultimately professional care will be required to properly restore your smile. The following are some of the more commons solutions offered by dentists.  Remember, that in Mexico and many other developing countries you will get the best results from Board Certified Dental Association dentists who have 2-4 more years’ specialist training in advanced procedures such as crowns, veneers, bridges and cosmetic dentistry.

Dental Filling or Bonding:  In the case of small chips - filling or bonding can solve the problem. For bonding, the tooth surface is etched with a liquid to roughen it and adhere the tooth color matching bonding material. Afterwards, an adhesive material is applied, followed by the bonding material. Lastly, an ultraviolet light will be used to harden the bonding material.

Dental Crown: In case of a lot of decay or breaking out of a large piece of tooth, the dentist grinds or files away a part of the remaining tooth and covers the same with a crown to protect the tooth and enhance its appearance. Porcelain and resin crowns can be made to match the original tooth.

Root Canal, Post and Rebuild - In case the entire top of tooth is fully broken along with the root in an intact position, the dentist performs a root canal and places a pin or post in the canal. Afterwards, he builds up enough structure onto which the crown can be made. In the later stage, the dentist may cement the crown over the pin or post-retained restoration.

The crown can be easily installed within two visits. At the first visit, the dentist takes x-rays for checking the roots of tooth and surrounding bone. A putty like material will be used to make an impression of tooth which is about to receive the crown.

A temporary crown of thin metal is used till the permanent one gets ready from the lab. During the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent one set.

Dental Veneers: If visible front tooth is broken or chipped, a dental veneer may contribute in making it look healthy again. If teeth are badly stained or cracked often several or all the  visible teeth may be veneered.  A veneer is a thin shell of tooth-colored porcelain or resin composite material covering the whole front of tooth with a thicker section for replacing the broken part of tooth.  Similar to a crown but 3-sided, thinner and more delicate.

Image result for google images dental veneers

In preparation, the dentist removes about 0.3 to 1.2 mm of enamel from its surface. An impression is sent to make the veneer. A dental lab needs to cast the veneer which can take 3-5 working days and a  2nd visit to the dentist is required to set the veneers.

Root canal therapy involves the removal of dead pulp from tooth, cleaning the same and sealing it.  It is performed by general dentists and endodontic specialists in Mexico and many developing countries and only permitted to be performed by specialists with advanced training in most developed countries such as the USA and Canada.

In Mexico and many other developing nations, you will get the best work from a board certified specialist who won’t be learning on-the-job at your expense.

The cost of a specialist vs. a general dentist in most developing countries is virtually identical according to the American Dental Association, so when going offshore for your dental work – take the ADA’s advice and choose one who is board certified in the specialties you require.

Puerto Vallarta - Favorite Vacation & Retirement Destination for US & Canadians

In 1963, Elizabeth Taylor followed Richard Burton to a sleepy little port on Mexico’s west coast where he was starring, along with Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner, in a John Huston-directed film called Night of the Iguana.

Puerto Vallarta's Historic District has over a dozen galleries, fine restaurants and nighclubs

For his movie set, John Huston chose Mismaloya, a small village just south of Puerto Vallarta in the Mexican state of Jalisco, for its resemblance to a crumbling coastal village of the 1940s. Elizabeth Taylor took up residence in nearby Puerto Vallarta, which in the 1960s already had a small community of both Mexican and expat artists and writers, drawn by the weather, natural beauty, and relative isolation.

El Chapo Extradition Appeals - Latest News on Legal Moves by Mexico's Drug Lord

MEXICO CITY — Mexican Judges halted the extradition of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the Mexican drug kingpin known as El Chapo, pending the outcome of appeals filed this week by Mr. Guzmán’s lawyers.
The appeals argue that the statute of limitations has run out on some of the crimes that Mr. Guzmán is accused of committing, his lead lawyer, José Refugio Rodríguez, told The Associated Press. They also argue that some of the accusations are based on hearsay rather than direct evidence, the lawyer said.

Mexico City appellate judges ruled that the appeals, which were filed in two courts on Monday and seek to block extradition requests by prosecutors in California and Texas, could go forward. Stays in Mexican extradition cases are nearly automatic, a courts official said, and the appeals process could take months, if not years, to run its course. The judges’ decisions were published Tuesday.
Mr. Guzmán faces various criminal charges in several American jurisdictions, including murder, drug trafficking, money laundering and arms possession. He is currently imprisoned in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez, but American officials would like to see him in custody in the United States as soon as possible, to ensure that he can be prosecuted and, they say, to significantly lower the chances of his escape, a skill he has ably demonstrated.
After a 2001 escape from Mexican custody, he remained on the run until his capture in 2014. He fled again a year later, bolting through a mile-long tunnel that led from his prison cell to a warehouse. After his recapture in January, the Mexican government finally decided to accede to a longstanding American request for extradition.

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Relations approved the extradition in May after receiving guarantees from the United States that Mr. Guzmán would not face the death penalty. Mexico, which has abolished capital punishment, refuses to extradite its citizens if they would face possible execution in the receiving country.

Mexico Dental Tourism Can Be Your Worst Nightmare - By David Mandich, Cabo San Lucas Health Care Writer

Most Dental Tourism Patients Go Abroad To Save on Dentistry.  But they don't know when to stop shopping prices. Which can lead to starring in your own dental horror story.

Dental Tourists don't travel to Los Algodones Mexico to take a vacation. They don't go on dental holidays to ride elephants in a Thai jungle or to dive for pearls in the Philippines. The primary motivating factor involved in dental tourism is price.

Once a patient  decides to go abroad for treatments - the price shopping
should cease at the border.

The patient is already getting 50% - 70% off for the same treatments back home and any more price shopping becomes redundant and detrimental to quality.

Photo: Whale watching tours are popular with dental tourists in Puerto Vallarta

Board Certified Dentists in Puerto Vallarta are the ones you want for your important dentistry. Take a dental vacation and bring back a beautiful new smile.

Puerto Vallarta in the state of Jalisco is a wonderful, traditional Mexican beach resort town with miles of clean, beautiful beaches, a historic district in city center, and many tourist activities for the visitor from fine dining to golf, dolphin shows, big game fishing, surfing and more.

Certified Doctors & Dentists Internationale' Association from Mexico can show you how to get a beautiful Hollywood smile at a price you can afford from a top dentist in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Tijuana or elsewhere in the world for that matter.

While Mexican dental vacation destinations like Cabo and Cancun are better know (and pricier) accommodations and dentist prices in Puerto Vallarta fall closer in line with popular low cost destinations such as Tijuana and Los Algodones. PV is a more traditional vacation destination catering to Mexicans as much as foreigners and has a lower cost of living than the more upscale beach destinations.

Most Puerto Vallarta dental tourists are searching for crowns, cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. And for the best work they should insist on a Board Certified Dentist when anywhere in Mexico.

The Key words are: Board Certified. Because most Puerto Vallarta (and all dentists in Mexico) are not certified for any advanced dentistry. Most are trained as general dentists only. That’s drilling, filling and pulling (non-surgical extractions).

But many general dentists in Mexico advertise for and attempt complicated dentistry on dental tourists. Some even call themselves 'Specialists.' Anyone can call themselves specialists in Mexico - even the ladies in the cantina can and do.

TIJUANA BECOMING A NEW PLACE TO HANG OUT IN - IT'S NOT LIKE IT USED TO BE - An Exciting Cultural Scene Makes it Better Than Ever

Tijuana has come a long ways in recent years according to this article. But the writer did leave one important facet out - healthcare tourism, which has become a major industry. Tijuana is the leading medical and dental tourism destination in Mexico for Americans and Canadians. -ed
By Meagan Drillinger
Tijuana is a destination you’ve certainly heard of but not necessarily one you might be selling.
Over the years Tijuana has gotten a notorious reputation as a seedy place where teenage boys from the U.S. celebrated rites of passage and depravity beckoned at every turn. And while that may have very well been the case as recently as eight years ago, one operator in the region insists that the TJ of today is decidedly different.

TOP MEDICAL & DENTAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS 2016 Survey By Certified Dentists & Doctors Internationale'

Photo: Land's End, Cabo San Lucas. Mexico medical and dental tourism is the most popular in the America's

Many Americans, Canadians and Western Europeans are traveling abroad for non-emergency procedures such as dental makeovers, hip replacement, cosmetic surgery, or even heart surgery. Each year, some 750,000 U.S. citizens travel to foreign destinations seeking medical treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of respondents to a Medical Tourism Association survey who traveled abroad for health reasons did so because they were uninsured. Americans also travel for elective procedures insurance doesn't cover. Cosmetic surgery and dentistry are particularly popular tourism choices, because they are rarely covered by health insurance.

Cost is a big factor in deciding whether to seek care abroad. As a rule of thumb - Procedures that cost more than $6,000 generally are cheaper if performed outside the U.S.

Best Los Algodones Dentist, Reviews, Los Algodones Dental Prices by the Board Certified Mexico Dental Association

By The Board Certified Mexico Dental Association

Los Algodones often called the Mecca of dental tourism in Mexico or Molar City, is located a mere 3 hours from San Diego California and Tijuana via US Hwy 8 or 1 hr. from Mexicali Mexico. It's located on across the Arizona border 10 miles from Yuma.

Every year tens of thousands of American and Canadian dental patients visit the tiny border town of 5,500. 350 dentists occupy the 4-5 block town center - along with discount pharmacies, optometrists and a scattering of restaurants and souvenir shops. The cattle, cantinas and brothels of days gone by were run out of town by a dentist turned mayor decades ago. If you are into selfies you may luck upon the town greeter walking about costumed as a giant smiling molar.

Fast as the Lone Ranger’s silver bullet …

My family knows the signs. Suddenly I groan, jump up, and start rubbing my leg or twisting a foot.

As I leaned back in the chair waiting for the dentist to check me after the hygienist finished cleaning my teeth, the thought hit me: “I hope I don’t get a cramp.”

As painful and unpleasant as they sometimes are, I can handle needles and even the grinding at the dentist chair. However, when an all too familiar tightening jerks into my toes as I sit in a dental chair, I know I am in for more misery.

HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES MISSING TEETH (Kim Kardashian breaks the internet missing more than teeth)

View these hilarious photos of celebs in desperate need of dental makeovers.

Newscasters, Politicians and Hollywood celebs have long known that one secret to success is to have a powerful smile. It's funny (and scary) to see some of our favorite people without teeth.

These pics have been photo shopped. But they really do show how much older one appears without teeth. Pics of Trump and Hillary are all over the net - likely created by mean-spirited supporters of their political opponents.  And way too frightening to look at. So we skipped those. 'Break The Internet'  Kim Kardashian (sans clothes and teeth) is always good for a smile. And she has a big one.

Justin Bieber whose publicity agents try to pass him off as the sometimes naughty but nice boy next door now looks like the parolee from the wrong side of town.

EBOLA FIGHT BREAKTHROUGH! $5 Vaccine Approved - Reuters News Update June 2016

Editor's comment:

"In less than 2 years of concentrated effort by governments and scientists around the world a cheap vaccine for Ebola has been created, tested, approved and rushed to the market. It is expected small outbreaks of the virus will continue to occur as they have in some African countries for decades. But now they may not become out-of-control runaway monster epidemics. Like HIV/AIDS... "

It is estimated 11,000 have died from the Ebola virus to date. But that figure pales when compared to the estimated 35 million who have died from the HIV/AIDS virus. Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, almost 78 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 39 million people have died of HIV.

Dengue, another killer virus is in the news. Dengvaxia the world's first Dengue vaccine was approved and distribution has begun summer of 2016 in the Philippine..

Read the following great news about Ebola from Reuters. It's good to see some positive news in the fight against viruses. What's the new scary pandemic virus this season? Zika I think. - ed

The Gavi global alliance for vaccines and immunization group signed a $5 million advance purchase commitment on Wednesday to buy a vaccine being developed by Merck to protect against future outbreaks of the deadly Ebola virus.

Gavi said the agreement would help the U.S. drug maker take the experimental Ebola vaccine through late-stage clinical trials to licensing and then through pre-qualification by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Now approved, Merck's so-called VSV-ZEBOV live attenuated Ebola Zaire vaccine would become one of the world's first licensed Ebola shots and Gavi would be able to start buying it to create a stockpile for future outbreaks, it said in a statement issued at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

A vast epidemic of Ebola which swept through three countries in West Africa last year killed more than 11,300 people and infected more than 28,600.

"The suffering caused by the Ebola crisis was a wake-up call to many in the global health community," said Gavi's chief executive Seth Berkley.

"New threats require smart solutions and our innovative financing agreement with Merck will ensure that we are ahead of the curve for future Ebola outbreaks."

The deal was agreed on the understanding that the vaccine will be submitted for a license by the end of 2017.

Speaking to Reuters in Davos, Berkley said the advance commitment should give a positive signal to drug makers developing products that may not have an immediate market.

"It's critical that we give confidence to companies that when they make this type of effort, there is somebody to buy it," he said.

As part of the agreement, Merck will ensure that 300,000 doses of the vaccine are available from May 2016 to be used in expanded use clinical trials as well as for emergency use as needed while development work on the shot continues.

Until the West Africa Ebola epidemic, which swiftly became the largest in history, previous outbreaks of the disease have infected far smaller numbers, usually fewer than 1,000 people.

Initial results from a clinical trial in Guinea of the vaccine, which tested it on some 4,000 people who had been in close contact with a confirmed Ebola case, showed complete protection after 10 days.

Merck says it has already submitted an application through WHO's Emergency Use Assessment and Listing (EUAL) procedure which, if approved, would allow for the vaccine to be used if there is another Ebola emergency before it is licensed.

Jeremy Farrar, director of Britain's Wellcome Trust global health charity which co-funded clinical trials of the Merck shot, said the "remarkable results" from those trials, as well as promising progress of other vaccine candidates, were "among the few positive outcomes to emerge from the epidemic".

The WHO announced last week that no new Ebola cases had been reported in the three worst affected countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in the preceding 42 days.

Yet shortly after the WHO announcement - which included a warning that sporadic flare-ups could occur - Sierra Leone reported an Ebola-related death.

Farrar said such instances show how an Ebola vaccine could yet be useful in this outbreak, even in its final stages.

"As we saw with the new confirmed case just last week, the Ebola epidemic is likely to have a long tail and it's possible that several more isolated cases will emerge in the coming weeks and months," he said in a statement.

"This vaccine...could still play an important role in containing any additional flare ups of this outbreak, as well as being available to help prevent future epidemics."

Tijuana Dentist Reviews, Forum - Separating Certified Tijuana Dentists from the Pretenders - David Mandich Healthcare Consumer Advocate

Tijuana's upscale Zona Rio has fine restaurants, museums, galleries, clubs, first-class hotels, malls, casinos and some of the best board certified dentists in Tijuana.

How do you sort out the pretenders from the dentists in Tijuana who are truly certified for your crowns, veneers, dental implants, oral surgery and orthodontics?

Are you searching for the proverbial Best Dentist in Tijuana?

If you are like most Americans who cross the border daily searching for a Tijuana dentist you want one who is an expert dentist and affordable.

Need a cleaning? You can get that at home but you can't get advanced dentistry in the US for a reasonable price anymore. Dentistry in the US is fast becoming something only the rich (or well insured) can afford with some dental procedures becoming as expensive as plastic surgery.

When you cross the border into Tijuana from San Diego you are immediately saving 50-75% on your dental work. Whoa. Stop shopping prices and start shopping quality.

You have to be careful in Tijuana (or in anywhere in any developing nation) when selecting a dentist for your important dental work as most dentists in TJ are non-certified general dentists. And they'd love to have a chance at doing your dental implants or cosmetic dental makeover.

For the best dentistry in Tijuana avoid non-certified general dentists when in need of a root canal, crown or dental implants and go for the real deal.

Find a Board Certified dentist  and you will get your dentistry made right the first time. And the cost will be within a nickel of a non-certified dentist.
